Howard Bruce Sutter was born on January 8, 1953. He is an American professional baseball pitcher. Bruce Sutter is a six-time All-Star and World Series champion in 1982. He was the top pitcher in the National League (NL) in 1979, he earned the NL Rolaids Relief Man Award 4 times. Between 1979–1982, and 1984, he is known to be the only pitcher to ever lead the NL in saves five times.
Bruce spent five seasons with the Cubs, also four seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, and three seasons with the Atlanta Braves. He acted as the closer for each team throughout his time there. He played in the eighth and ninth innings of games, which helped him pave the way for a closer role that was more specialized. Midway through the 1980s, Sutter started having shoulder issues. He had three operations before retiring in 1989.
